Five Things My Mom Was Right About

Maybe it’s just me “getting old,” but I’m realizing more and more that my mom has actually been right about a lot of things (yes, I admit it).

And so, going against all my rebellious-teenager instincts (and in honor of Mother's Day), here are five things my mom was right about…

1.) “One day, you’ll thank me for all these hikes.”

Growing up in Maryland, I was ridiculously lucky to be within about an hours’ driving distance of many beautiful state parks that boasted waterfalls, endless forests, and gorgeous rocky clearings that provided sweeping views. Almost every weekend, my parents and I would load up into the car and head to one of the many state parks for a morning or an afternoon of hiking.

And almost every weekend, without fail, I’d whine and complain about how hiking was “boring” and how much I hated it. In my mind, nature was stagnant and dull – there was nothing exciting to do when all you could do was walk… Oftentimes, it was also sticky and hot (Maryland is pretty much a swamp in the spring and summer), and I hated getting sweaty and yucky when I could have been watching TV at home, in the air conditioning.

Now, over ten years later, I can honestly say – thanks mom, you were right.

Thanks for instilling an awe-inspiring love of nature in me, despite my unwillingness to acknowledge it until years later. Today, I ardently miss those hikes and the proximity to such beautiful state parks, and I thrive being outdoors and being active. I definitely attribute this to my mom and her determination to get me outdoors and moving… Despite my childish resistance.

2.) “You can do it.”

This applies to many situations to list… From arduous group projects in college with teammates who drove me mad to uncertainty in my professional endeavors, it always seemed impossible until it was done.

And you were right mom. I did it. And I can do it again.

3.) “Give it time, you’ll learn to love coffee (and beer).”

This is hilariously true because I now can’t go a day without having at least two cups of coffee. When I was younger though? Coffee was bitter, black, and too disgusting to stomach. Beer was pretty much the same – too carbonated, too bitter, too much of an aftertaste. Now I’m eating (or drinking) my words.

4.) “You’re in too much of hurry to grow up – you’re going to miss these days.”

My last semester of college, I was so ready and so excited to be done. No more tests, no more quizzes, no more papers – bring it on! I was ready to enter the “real world” and be a “professional,” working in a fun, exciting job, and to be living on my own in my very own apartment.

Well, I did work a fun, exciting job… For about two months until everything changed and went downhill quickly. Reality set in, and I quickly learned what it really meant to dread going into work every day and to hate your job…

And yes, I also really missed college. Despite those pesky quizzes, tests, and papers, I missed the freedom of being a student and the invigorating environment of academia.

So you’re right, mom. I do miss those days. And I was in too much of a hurry to grow up.

5.) “Be patient, work hard, and good things will come.”

Finding a job in my last semester of college was equally stressful and frustrating because I wanted to have everything perfectly planned out right now. I wanted to be able to apply for a job, go to an interview, and hear back about an offer within a matter of days… But of course, we all know that’s not how it works.

At moments, it was frustrating and disappointing to be left weeks without word from any of the dozens of shops that I had sent applications to, and I felt like I had worked so hard in college for nothing.

After wasting too much time and energy on stress and impatience, things finally started coming to fruition when I “let go” and allowed time to do its thing…

So mom, you were right. And you’re still right, even if my impatience is trying to overrule that again.

You hear that, mom? That’s me admitting defeat (lovingly). You were right, and you’re going to continue to be right about more and more…

But just to be clear, you’re never going to be right about me eating meat again. There’s too much vegetarian guilt in me for that.

Happy Mother’s Day.

My favorite moments of 2013....

It should not strike you as a surprise that Americans love lists. I can't remember where exactly I read this (seemingly obvious) statistic, but I remember that it was shortly after my "21 things I learned the hard way" post, which made me giggle.

Anyway, as the year wraps up, I come to y'all with yet another list! This one is more personal than the ones you'll see on Buzzfeed - it's my personal ten favorite moments of the year (in no particular order).

I believe that it's been a fantastic year, so here's a snapshot of ten of the moments, people, and places that made this year a highlight in my mind:

  1. September - Beta Lake Day
Sincerely one of the most wonderful weekends of my college experience. My guy's fraternity hosted a social event at a lake about an hour's drive from our campus. Though the bus ride was lengthier than it should have been (I think our bus driver ended up getting lost...), I got to spend the entire afternoon with my guy, my favorite fraternity (which actually has a good amount of my closest guy friends in it), and a handful of my sorority sisters, who got invited by other Betas.
  2. September - Labor Day
For Labor Day this year, three of my best friends and I (Herschell not pictured because he was playing photographer for this image) hopped into Kylie's car, and drove to her parents' house, where we took their boat out for a wonderful afternoon on the lake. It felt so lovely to be on the water with some of the absolute loveliest people in my life, and I even got to try my hand at waterskiing!!!
  3. May - July - My summer "family"
This summer was another one full of work... However, it's hard to call it work when you work with such amazing people. These beautiful ladies became my "family" this summer, as I spent every day (Tuesday - Friday from 10 - 6) with them, laughing, chatting, and doing what I loved - photography.
  4. August - All night long
This day will forever stand out as one of the most wonderful nights of my college experience. Going against a particularly strong hermit instinct on this night was the best idea I'd ever had. I left my apartment at 11 PM and spent the next seven hours with some of the most awesome people I know. We party-hopped, ran around campus in the middle of the night, sang, danced, and had a night full of incredible memories. And what makes this night even more special? It was the first time I really got to meet and spend time with the guy who would later become my wonderful boyfriend. :)
  5. March - Zoo day
When my roommate Lydia's best friend Alana came to town, Lydia decided that Alana needed to see the Fort Worth Zoo. So along with Trevor, one of my brilliant theatre friends (who has his own YouTube channel here), we headed to the zoo. When we got there, we spent a great few hours observing the animals, taking tons of photos (me), and filming a fun video (Trevor). It was definitely an afternoon well-spent.
  6. March - Spring break in NOLA
My best friend Elizabeth lives in New Orleans. This past spring break, my mother just happened to have a conference in New Orleans, so I jumped at the chance to get to go to the Big Easy with her and to spend some time with Liz! The city definitely stole my heart - it was absolutely brilliant and I immediately realized why locals are so proud to be from NOLA. Not only that, it was a great excuse to spend some one-on-one time with Liz, and her local perspective gave me great insight into the beautiful city.
  7. April - Best friends become "sisters"
My two best friends - Liz and Kylie - became official initiated sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi, which made the three of us "sisters for life." Words cannot express how incredibly happy - and lucky - I am to be able to call these two women not only my best friends, but also my sisters!
  8. September - My guy
After that incredible all-nighter in August, Lakota and I started talking... And we haven't stopped since. He asked me to be his girlfriend in early September, and I am so thankful to have him in my life. In both my highest and lowest moments, he helps keep a smile on my face. I don't know how he does it, but I sure hope he never stops.
  9. October - Halloween
Halloween night this year was a fantastic affair. Liz made our brilliant costumes (which we couldn't stop getting compliments on!), and we attended a fun house party as Gruu and his minions. It was a great way to spend time with my best friends, and the photos we took dressed up all together are some of my favorites from the year.
  10. June - Seattle
Seattle stole my heart all over again this summer when my parents and I went back to the Emerald City. The mid-60 degree weather was a welcome change from Tulsa's sweltering heat, and one of my favorite memories of the trip was our whale-watching tour, which was a great success and a brilliant experience!
2013, you sure have been great to me... Here's to hoping that 2014 is just as great - if not better!

What were your personal favorite highlights of 2013? Let me know!

21 Things I Learned the Hard Way

So if you're active on Facebook, you've probably seen this list making the rounds. It's a bit of a step away from the regular lewd college humor of TFM, and it's the inspiration behind this post. The summer before my sophomore year of college, I remember getting an influx of questions from my younger friends. "Ola!" they asked me, "Give me some advice about college.. I'm so nervous!"

Besides the generic "DO YOUR LAUNDRY" pieces of advice, I also offered a few personal tidbits. The last two and a half years of my life have been the most eye-opening experience. I have learned more than I thought was possible, and I'm not just talking about the assignments that I'm completing and turning in to get my marketing and entrepreneurial management degrees.
  1. You will make mistakes. Some of them will be worse than others. Nonetheless, admit to them, apologize, learn from them, and move on.
  2. Being single is the best thing that can - and will - happen to you. Embrace it, and take that time to learn to love everything about you - even the supposed "flaws" you can't stop picking at.
  3. You don't need someone else - you just want them. The second you stop needing someone is the second that someone worth wanting comes into your life.
  4. You will fail a test... Or three. Cry a little if you really have to, but then take a deep breath, pick up the pieces, and then buckle down and study harder for the next one.
  5. Your friends are your rock. There will be moments that will put you in a really, really dark place, and they will be there for you. They will hold you and they will carry you through.
  6. That being said, be there for your friends. They'll get into their dark places too, and you owe it to them to help them get out, just like they helped you.
  7. Don't internalize your feelings. It's unhealthy and counterproductive. Find a way to express the inner dialogue that's making you anxious, upset, or stressed.
  8. Talk out your conflicts. Don't let them fester, and don't resolve them through raised voices and harsh words. Take a deep breath, think about what you're going to say, and then figure out a good solution for both parties.
  9. A run can be better than Prozac. Put on your tennis shoes, put some good music in your ears, and just go, even if you're half-shuffling, half-jogging.
  10. Be open and willing to try new things. Sometimes, those things will change your entire perspective on the world and will add a new dimension of happiness to your life.
  11. Go out on the weekends. Don't let studying and the desire to be a hermit consume your life. Let loose and have fun once in a while, but know your limits.
  12. Schedule some down time into your day. Trust me, you have at least an hour that you can devote to doing nothing "productive." Your mental health - and the tension in your neck and shoulders - will thank you.
  13. If you make commitments - keep them. It speaks more about your character than you may realize.
  14. Not everything in life is fun or enjoyable. Grit your teeth and get it done, it's not going to kill you.
  15. Life's too short to sit idly by. Keep learning, keep searching, keep moving forward.
  16. It's only awkward if you make it awkward.
  17. Don't be afraid to disagree or speak your mind. You have a say in things too.
  18. Remember to bring yourself back to the present. Don't get too stuck in the past or in the future - enjoy the now, because it'll be gone before you know it.
  19. Learn to be grateful. It's been scientifically proven that people who express gratitude on a regular basis tend to be happier. Practice it and learn that it's true.
  20. Your parents have the magical powers to make everything better. Don't forget to go home every once in a while to hug your mom and dad. You'll feel rejuvenated, and they'll be so happy to see you.
  21. The people who matter will find a way to stay in your life. Those who don't will fall away. Let them.
